Labrador Origins

The Labrador Retriever as we know it today descended from the "Water dogs" of Newfoundland. These dogs first arrived in England in the early 1800's. The retrievers from Newfoundland were called various names such as St. John's dog, the little Newfoundlander, and the Labrador. The name Labrador was given to the breed by the Third Earl of Malmesbury around 1840 to differentiate the water dog from the larger Newfoundland dogs. The Fifth Duke Of Buccleuch used the name Labrador about the same time, writing in his diary that he took his Labrador with him on his yacht to Naples.
